“Planting Seeds” Training Sessions January 2012
Last week Planting Seeds and Camino Seguro hosted a three day teacher training session for public school teachers, working in Zone 3, around the Guatemala City Dump.
During these three days, teachers had the opportunity to learn about Planting Seeds, which is a progressive methodology based on long term research and current developmentally appropriate practices in the field of Early Childhood Education.
Susan, and Program Coordinator, Madeli Quinones directed six four-hour sessions, including the philosophy and methodology of Planting Seeds, and demonstrations of a large number of hands-on learning activities, made by the Planting Seeds teachers working at Camino Seguro.
The training program also featured a wonderful half hour session in music and movement, with Shannon Moyle from Ottawa, Canada who has been a committed volunteer in Guatemala for the last five years. We also provided time, space and materials for the teachers to make interactive learning activities for their classrooms.
Area Supervisor Hector Lopez, attended the three day session and enthusiastically participated in the activities, beside his teachers and their principals. The training was evaluated and was reported to be a huge success, with many of the teachers requesting future training. Their only regret was that the methodology has not yet been extended up to the grade six level.
The seeds continue to germinate here in Guatemala.
The garden is beginning to bloom!
