ABOUT HORIZONS OF FRIENDSHIP:
Horizons of Friendship, with its head office in Cobourg Ontario, is a Canadian non-profit international development agency committed to eliminating the root causes of poverty and injustice through the cooperation of people from the South and North.
Horizons of Friendship support Central American and Mexican partner organizations who undertake local initiatives which further this goal.
In Canada, Horizons of Friendship raise awareness of global issues and work with Canadian organizations at the local and national levels to bring about positive and lasting change.
Horizons of Friendship was founded by three Canadians from Cobourg, Ontario as a result of their volunteer experience in Honduras in Central America. It was incorporated as a non-profit, charitable organization in 1973. Since then, their work has grown considerably to include Mexico and all six Spanish-speaking countries in Central America – the area known as Mesoamerica. The success of their program has reinforced the commitment upon which Horizons of Friendship was built; helping people living in poverty in both rural and urban areas to help themselves. Horizons’ self-help community development projects provide a viable alternative to poverty and underdevelopment. The projects are holistic in nature, addressing a variety of concerns such as land ownership, indigenous people and women’s rights, public health issues and environmental concerns, and also include safe water, health, housing and skills training. All projects are initiated by the communities themselves.
